Specific Experience Highlights

Design & Construction Management:   Oversaw $20M emergency Homeland Security contract for Caltrans to install 250+ security cameras and detectors using a wireless IP based video architecture on 9 structures in the Bay Area.  Self-performed $7.5M of the installation; interfaced with the owner; budgeting; scheduling of 2 other Prime contractors; worked with the System Integrator to guarantee delivery with minimal cost.  Project substantially under budget and first major milestones have been achieved as of 11-2002.

Project Troubleshooting:   Fast-track construction for RR Donnelley, Reno NV.  Project taken over at 30% completion while behind schedule and over-budget.  Problems included labor shortages, crew size 60-65, 2 shifts, 100+ hours per week, design deficiencies.  Project turned around and completed ahead of schedule at $950,000 profit margin in 10 weeks.

Business Turnarounds & Troubleshooting:   Have rebuilt and troubleshot market areas ranging from telecommunications to underground to electrical service and commercial work.  Problems all contained within months and turned around with a very stable base, solid management team and ready for growth within 1-2 years. 

Accounting and Cost Controls:  Implemented an accounting system at Royal to view P&L by Market Area and see real-time displays on the computer desktop.  This resulted in several Market Areas being cut, others being expanded and development of new markets more rapidly because of detailed and timely information.  Revenue and profits increased.  Set up financial systems, cost controls, payroll, Secretary Treasurer for MCD Construction. Later this experience was used to rapidly implement cost controls at Kvaerner and on a consulting basis for Ridgley Engineering & WirelessGuys.  

Information Management:  Compiled 15 books of German engineering drawings into 1” binder of cable pulling and termination charts.  Saved $120,000.  Simplified Employee Handbook to 20% it’s original size.  Streamlined and automated accounting reports.   

Business Planning:  Oversaw 3 Year Strategic Planning initiative in 1999 for Royal Electric and wrote business plan summary to go along with new accounting and company structure in 2001.  Developed business plan for restructuring Electrical Division at Kvaerner.  Detailed plan was used as basis for capitol investment and resource allotment.  Successful planning for MCD Construction lead to increased credit lines and bonding capacity. 

Recruiting and Training:  Oversees HR Manager including safety program at Royal Electric.  Recruited Market Managers for Wireless, Service & Underground.  Implemented a Rapid Training Team within Royal to help with change and growth process.  Instructor at apprenticeship program – 4th year, Motor Controls.  Strong coaching and presentation skills.  Developed foreman’s manual & training.

Quality Control:  Certified by U.S. Army Corps Of Engineers.  Diversified field experience and engineering knowledge utilized to monitor quality, correct design deficiencies, and save money through value engineering for both company and client at remedial water project, Tracy CA.  For the Bay Area Security Enhancement (BASE) project we put QC procedures in place and accelerated delivery.

Technology:  Strongly believe in streamlining via technology to improve quality and lower costs.  QC commissioning system put in place for BASE project was custom designed SQL database with web front-end setup for mobile wireless access through cellular network anywhere on the project improving quality, producing a break-even ROI at 2 months and saving thousands of dollars per week in productivity after that.  Have developed a lot of skills and strong network of people for working with the web, wireless technology, accounting systems and databases.  See project portfolio for more examples of technology use.
